FLINT, Mich. — Former President Donald Trump addressed a packed arena in Flint, where his supporters expressed both excitement and concern for his safety after a recent threat. With a crowd of 6,000 eagerly awaiting him, Trump humorously acknowledged the inherent risks associated with being president, stating, “It’s a dangerous business.”
His return to the campaign trail came shortly after a man was arrested for attempting to build a sniper’s nest outside Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The serious nature of the incident has made supporters increasingly anxious about their candidate’s safety.
Doug Altman, a 76-year-old volunteer for Trump’s campaign, expressed the sentiments of many in the crowd, saying, “He’s gotta continue to get out and talk to the people, you’re not going to stop him.” Altman, who fears for Trump’s safety, emphasized the importance of supporting him in the critical lead-up to the election.
During the rally, Trump returned to his familiar style, noting the dangers he faces as a presidential candidate. He compared the act of running for office to risky endeavors like race car driving or bull riding, asserting that these assassination attempts demonstrate his determination and readiness for leadership. “Only consequential presidents get shot at,” he remarked, blending humor with a strong sense of resolve.
The event, reminiscent of town halls, marked Trump’s first public appearance following the alarming incident where Secret Service agents had to fire upon a suspect near his golf course. Fortunately, Trump was unharmed during this alarming event.
As he spoke, Trump took his time to recount his administration’s achievements in various sectors, including the economy, energy, tariffs, and international affairs, notably the Russia-Ukraine conflict. During the discussion, he faced softer questions posed by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, as well as audience members, while underscoring his critiques of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding inflation and immigration issues.
Encouraging the crowd about his supposed “Day One” agenda, Trump promised to tackle border security and promote energy development, steering clear of previous remarks where he referred to wanting to be a “dictator” from day one of a potential presidency. He also took the opportunity to poke fun at political opponents, downplaying the significance of climate change while humorously predicting its potential benefits for Michigan.
The former president elaborated on the details of the thwarted attack, commending a woman who recognized the suspect’s suspicious behavior and helped alert the authorities. “Women are smarter than men,” he joked, to an approving response from the audience.
In Flint, known for its blue-collar roots, dedicated supporters traveled long distances to participate. Ana and Chad Watanabe flew in from Salt Lake City, fueled by a desire to show their support after hearing news of the assassination attempt. “We want to be able to support a party and a leader who supports our faith in God,” Ana expressed, underscoring a need for strong leadership and job restoration.
Trump’s supporters remained deeply committed, with volunteers like Altman emphasizing that, despite stricter gun laws, determined individuals could still gain access to weapons. The alleged gunman, identified as Ryan Routh, reportedly camped out for hours before being intercepted by the Secret Service.
At the rally, concerns about safety were palpable. James Schultz, a veteran who had served in Afghanistan, voiced his anxiety about the attempts on Trump’s life, suggesting that there needs to be a more robust security presence at future events. “There is a complete failure on every level in my opinion,” he remarked, reflecting on the gravity of the situation and the uneasy climate surrounding the campaign trail.
As Trump moves forward in his campaign, the chilling reality of these threats looms large, even as his supporters rally around him with unwavering enthusiasm.
