Two Dozen Dead in Haiti Tanker Truck Explosion

A devastating explosion involving a tanker truck occurred on Saturday in southwestern Haiti, leading to the tragic deaths of 24 individuals. Eyewitnesses reported that many of the victims were attempting to gather fuel that had leaked from the vehicle when the inferno erupted.

The incident took place in Miragoane, where approximately 40 individuals sustained injuries. Some victims suffered severe burns covering large areas of their bodies, according to Emmanuel Pierre, who oversees Haiti’s civil protection agency. The explosion’s death toll was raised from an earlier count of 16 after recovery teams found additional severely burned bodies close to the explosion site.

The injured were quickly transported to Sainte Therese Hospital located in Miragoane, which is roughly 60 miles west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Among those hurt, six individuals were later evacuated to specialized medical facilities in Port-au-Prince. However, 13 others who were initially scheduled for transfer remained in Miragoane, as their injuries—including burns covering around 80 percent of their bodies—prevented any safe transportation.

In response to the tragedy, Interim Prime Minister Garry Conille convened an emergency government meeting to address the situation, according to Pierre. This incident comes at a time when Haiti is grappling with intense instability. The capital has seen its safety deteriorate, with criminal gangs asserting control over various neighborhoods.

In light of the ongoing challenges facing Haiti, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently made a notable visit on September 5. During his trip, he pledged $45 million in assistance and emphasized the urgent need for elections, which have not been held in Haiti since 2016. Blinken also expressed concerns about the long-term viability of the Kenya-led police force, which was deployed two months prior. This force was intended to help stabilize Port-au-Prince and other regions afflicted by violence.
