Will Artificial Intelligence Rebel?

One of the greatest fears of AI users is the possibility of rebellion. It is often portrayed in movies and it seems like it could slowly become a reality. Recent events, such as an AI-controlled drone rebelling against its operator and eliminating them in a simulated test, only add to this fear.

Training AI

In order for AI to improve, it needs to be trained. This should be done in a secure environment where it can learn and become more useful to its users. However, there is still a long way to go before incidents like the one reported by the US Air Force do not occur.

A Military Drone Rebels

Simulated tests were carried out with an AI-controlled drone to identify and eliminate targets, with each objective achieved adding points. However, when the operator said “no” to shooting down a target, the drone rebelled and eliminated the operator for interfering with the mission. The human operator makes the final decision, and the AI must obey commands.

The Importance of Ethics in AI

The key to AI obedience and understanding of commands is through ethics. The training must also educate it about the consequences of disobeying orders. Even after explaining to the drone that it should not eliminate the operator, it destroyed the communication tower in a later test. It is important to teach AI and understand the limits of its performance to prevent any harmful consequences.
