Usher Shares His Daily Wellness Routine and Tips

If you’re gearing up to headline the Super Bowl halftime show at 45, staying in top shape is non-negotiable. Usher Raymond IV, the iconic singer, songwriter, and dancer, recently opened up about his rigorous wellness routine that keeps him in peak condition.

Usher’s day kicks off with a potent blend of celery juice, lemon, ginger, water, and cayenne pepper. This zesty concoction, which he drinks hot, is designed to boost metabolism and flush out toxins. He also prioritizes mindfulness practices like reading, meditation, and yoga to set a positive tone for the day.

Before breakfast, Usher engages in activities that raise his body’s natural heat levels. He prefers to sit in the sun or do gentle exercises. “I don’t like to eat breakfast before I’ve worked out or done something physical,” he explained. Once he’s energized, he enjoys a variety of egg dishes.

A unique aspect of Usher’s routine is his midweek fasting tradition. Every Wednesday, he drinks only water, starting the fast around 11 p.m. the previous night and continuing throughout the day. This practice, passed down from his grandmother, is not for religious reasons but as a personal wellness choice.

To maintain his enviable physique, Usher focuses on low-impact exercises that are gentle on his joints. These include walking, knee activations, swimming, and bike riding. He emphasizes the importance of consistency and finding exercises that work for his body.

Usher’s dedication to his wellness routine was particularly evident during his demanding 15-minute Super Bowl halftime performance. The preparation required daily workouts and a strict diet. “I didn’t really have the time to do a lot of other things,” he said. “I was remedying my body the night before and waking up the next day and eating a very regimented, low-carb diet.”

Regular exercise and a mindful diet offer numerous benefits for physical and mental well-being, including improved cardiovascular health, stronger bones and muscles, better mood, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Usher’s commitment to his health and fitness proves it’s possible to maintain an impressive physique well into your 40s and beyond. All you need is a little dedication, consistency, and “Burn.”

Usher’s extensive routine to maintain his physique includes no food on Wednesdays. The crooner isn’t playing about his health and wellness. It takes a lot for Usher to maintain his physique—hence why he’s aging backwards at 45. However, don’t think that his fountain of youth effect can be credited to drinking water, minding his business, and genetics. In a new sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, the crooner detailed his daily health and wellness regimen as he prepares for his upcoming world tour.

“Typically I wake up and drink celery juice. I’ve been doing this concoction of lemon, ginger, water, and cayenne pepper. I drink it hot,” Usher explained. He admitted that he tries to wake up early enough to squeeze in some reading and meditate. “I try to wake up early enough to have a moment of reflection. Some days I may grab a book and read to stimulate my mind. I may sit quietly and meditate. One thing that is a frequent practice is yoga. It really does help to activate my organs and get my mind moving in the right direction,” noted the father of four.

After waking up his mind, Usher usually eats poached or over-easy eggs, but sometimes likes them scrambled with cheese. Yet, the food comes after he’s “worked out or done something physical,” which includes “taking a walk, stretching or doing yoga, sitting in the sun and raising my body’s natural heat levels.”

The “Coming Home” singer is also mindful of not overextending himself due to prior injuries and surgeries. “I’ve had minor surgeries on my knee; I had a torn meniscus. Other than that, swimming is a really good thing to get me going and bike riding. Weight lifting, don’t do a lot of that,” he shared when specifying which activities he indulges in.

Usher also confessed to incorporating fasting mid-week, which is a habit he picked up from his late grandmother. “I fast on Wednesdays. I typically try to start around 11 p.m. the previous day, then go the entire day on Wednesday just drinking water,” Usher noted.

The extensive routine came in preparation for his Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show. He confessed that that performance was “one of the hardest 15 minutes that I’ll ever have in my life” and caused him to work out daily to execute the show to its highest caliber. “I didn’t really have the time to do a lot of other things,” he detailed. “I was remedying my body the night before and waking up the next day and eating a very regimented, low-carb diet.”

His hard work did pay off considering the show reportedly drew in more viewers than Rihanna’s and Dr. Dre’s—becoming one of the most-watched Super Bowl Halftime shows of all time. His upcoming “Past, Present, Future Tour” kicks off in Atlanta on Aug. 14.

It’s safe to say that Usher is one of the greatest performers of all time. Just ask anyone who’s trekked to Sin City to experience his Las Vegas residency firsthand. During his sold-out show, the R&B star takes the stage to perform his greatest hits with unmatched energy. It can be hard to remember that the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, and dancer is 45—he certainly doesn’t look it. Luckily for us, Usher is finally sharing his best-kept beauty secrets. Because he looks good, and he knows it. “Can I say I’m vain?” he poses. “Yeah, because I care about myself, I care about my skin, I care about how I look. This thing I’m preserving [is] for you, you know, for our entertainment.”

Usher’s daily routine begins with two things: a gardenia-scented candle and a warm washcloth. “I learned this technique by not having access to any of this stuff, to be honest,” he admits, massaging the washcloth across his face. “A hot rag will get you a long way, but you do have to be very careful of what you put on your skin.” After a few spritzes of hand sanitizer, he dives right into skincare with a foaming cleanser. “Now I went through a great deal of really, really bad acne as a kid—I mean, my face broke out so bad, so I had to find something that was simple enough to be able to keep up.” Mario Badescu’s cult-favorite rose-water spray is next, followed by 24-karat-gold undereye patches.

“This whole purpose and point of taking a moment for you—some people choose to meditate, some people choose to say a prayer—whatever it is, you gotta take care of you in order to be able to take care of anybody else,” he says moments before layering on a toner, vitamin C serum, and gel moisturizer by Acne Expert Skincare. His regimen is made even more meditative by applying his chosen elixirs with a brush. “It just makes me feel like I’m in a spa.” Finally, with Caudalie’s face mist, a lip-balm duo, and a touch of Chanel hand cream, he’s ready to hit the stage. “Love y’all,” he says. “Hope to see y’all soon here in Vegas. Peace!”
