Venezuelan prosecutor highlights the convictions against 210 state security officials for crimes against human rights.

A total of 210 Venezuelan state security officials have received convictions this year, after having confirmed their participation in crimes against Human Rights (HR) in that South American country.

The information was highlighted this Wednesday by the attorney general of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, who explained that the officials carried out police and military tasks; and that the sentences represent “a significant amount.”

The prosecutor reported that based on the work carried out by his office in defense of human rights, this year they have 1,108 officials were charged, 820 already charged and 582 deprived of liberty preventively, for the alleged commission of this type of crime.

Furthermore, the prosecutor said, There are 158 individuals identified for participating in crimes against human rights., 40 of them accused and 31 deprived of liberty, while the investigations are being carried out.

“We are always going to be pending of the investigations so that they conclude, obviously, with a final sentence that determines the responsibility of those involved,” said Saab.

Some solved cases

The prosecutor made reference to some cases resolved during this year and among them he mentioned that of former councilor Fernando Albán, who died on October 8, 2018 at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) in Caracas.

For this case, Saab said, they were convicted on December 3 two Sebin officials for the crimes of wrongful death, breach of custody obligations, conspiracy and favoring aggravated flight. The officials admitted the facts and received a sentence of 5 years and 10 months in prison.

The homicide of citizen David Vallenilla, executed during a protest in front of the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base, in Caracas, on June 22, 2017, was also resolved. For this case, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison, on October 22, 2017. the civil servant of the Aviation Arli Méndez, for the crimes of homicide qualified with treachery, futile motives and improper use of organic weapons.

Saab commented that another case that received a conviction was the murder of Leonardo González during a protest in Carabobo state on July 27, 2017. Four former officials of the Naguanagua Municipal Police and 2 former officials of the Carabobo Police were convicted for this crime. to a sentence of 28 years and 7 months in prison, on November 4.

Officials chased the victim and shot him multiple times to his vehicle, and after seeing him injured, they abandoned him at the scene. Luis Guillermo Lachmann was also injured in the events, “said Saab.

The prosecutor mentioned other cases occurred in different regions of the country that originated the demonstrations of the year 2017. He also highlighted the disposition of the Public Ministry to defend human rights and guarantee that this type of crime is not repeated in the country.
