The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, reported Thursday that the Public Ministry (ía) will investigate the anti-Chavista commission recently created by the former deputies of the Parliament of 2015, whose term expired in January 2021, which will handle the assets of the State abroad, until recently controlled by the so-called “interim government”.

“The Public Ministry appointed the 67th National and 94th National prosecutor’s offices to investigate and punish corruption crimes linked to the illegal appointment of a phantasmagorical ‘parliamentary commission’ imposed for the theft of Venezuelan assets abroad,” the prosecutor said in his account on the social network Twitter.

The prosecutor’s announcement is related to the latest actions of the Venezuelan opposition that does not recognize the legitimacy of the Government of Nicolás Maduro, which he calls a dictatorship.

This group agreed on December 30 to eliminate the so-called “interim government”, which was headed by Juan Guaidó for almost four years, as well as the creation of an executive commission that will deal with matters related to the “defense of assets abroad”, which have been under the power of the interim.

So far, the anti-Chavista group has not reported who will make up this commission in charge of the accounts and wealth deposited in nations that recognized Guaidó in 2019, when he proclaimed himself as “president in charge” of Venezuela.

Last Friday, the majority of former parliamentarians elected in 2015 – who do not recognize the legitimacy of the current Legislature, controlled by Chavismo – reformed the transition statute, the roadmap of the presidency in charge, to abolish the interim.

This reform creates a Board of Directors and Asset Protection, although it has not been clear how this commission will be formed or who will integrate it.
