Version management: GitHub is moving development to the cloud

The GitHub engineering team continues to develop its platform and relies on the Codespaces development environment hosted in the cloud. The aim is to decouple the basis of the version management service – which was previously largely based on macOS – from Apple’s operating system.

From now on, the online editor based on Visual Studio Code is responsible for the standard development environment of GitHub. At the same time, with Codespaces, the service is publicly available for all customers in the plans of GitHub Teams and GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Billing is based on actual usage and the virtual machine used. The latter start with 2 processor cores and 4 GB of RAM and go up to 32 cores and 64 GB of RAM.

According to GitHub, many developers face entry barriers when they want to participate in a project because they first have to laboriously configure a suitable environment. Codespaces should now remove this hurdle and Make it as easy as possible for developers to get started on a project.

The connection to codespaces is possible either via the browser or via the source code editor Visual Studio Code. For teamwork, it should be possible to create uniform environments for projects of any size with ready-made images.

Codespaces is based on Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code and has been in beta since 2020. At the time, Microsoft had discontinued its own Codespaces project, which started in 2019 with a similar goal under the name Visual Studio Online. The company referred to the fresh Codespaces of the subsidiary GitHub.
