The Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket took off this Thursday from the Vostochny cosmodrome (in southeastern Russia) with 36 OneWeb communication satellites on board. The launch took place at 9:40 GMT.
This is the seventh launch of a Russian rocket that has carried OneWeb satellites this year. The previous one was successfully carried out from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) on September 14, bringing 34 satellites into orbit.
OneWeb, a London-based global communications company, is developing a constellation of low-orbit satellites that will provide high-speed Internet access to the entire world. In total, the company plans to deploy 648 satellites by June 2022 with the goal of facilitating global broadband coverage.
