If the internet is the information superhighway, then VPN providers are the used car dealers of the internet. There are countless providers with sometimes grandiose promises of anonymity, privacy and security. Some of the full-bodied claims are simply wrong and others cannot be verified.

This article is intended to bring some clarity to the murky VPN soup on offer. The focus is on providers for private individuals who want to protect themselves in public WLANs or who want to move around the network with an IP address located abroad. We have identified eleven providers: AzireVPN, Hide.me, IVPN, Mozilla VPN, Mullvad, OVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), StrongVPN, VPN.AC, WeVPN and Windscribe. We recorded what we noticed during the research with the providers that fell through the grid such as CyberGhost or NordVPN.
