“Symbiology”: an art show on a planet in emergency
“Symbiology” is an invented word, which aims to express a mixture of art and symbiosis in order to generate relationships with other beings (whose meaning represents, in biology, the way in which individuals of different species relate to each other, to obtain a benefit, while in psychology it is used to refer to relationships in which individuals behave as if they were a single person).
The exhibition brings together more than 170 works of contemporary Argentine art by more than 140 artists of all country. The works explore new links between the human and non-human conditions, at a time when the planet’s habitability crisis raises deep concerns regarding the dominant models.
Held jointly by the Secretariat of Cultural Heritage, the CCK, the Ministry of Culture of the Nation and the Medifé Foundation, the exhibition is curated by Valeria González, secretary of Cultural Heritage.
Without a doubt, “The hornero’s nest” by Marta Minujín represents the highest point of attraction. Here the artist recreated that installation once again, which had other versions exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1999, at the Herlitzka + Faria gallery, at arteBA 2014 edition and at Site Santa Fe (New Mexico, United States, in 2016 ).
This time, the work does not have the performative component of the original 1976 version (titled “Communicating with land” and exhibited at La Rural, and included an international land exchange). That original installation measured 2.30 meters in diameter by 2.5 meters high and was made with a mixture of Peruvian and Argentine soil. Once inside the nest, three videos were accessed and it was accompanied by bags of imported soil, which after the sample were sent to colleagues from other countries, under the order that they mix it with local soil.
That mixed land had to return to Buenos Aires, so that Marta Minujín herself could take her back to Machu Picchu. It is that everything had started there, with a permission from the director of the Museum of Archeology of Cuzco.
