Social media platforms are full of slang of different types. Some of them are extremely funny and irrelevant, while others can be used outside these platforms as well. The slang that you use while texting and messaging becomes your extra language. These slangs also include acronyms, one of which is DTB.

DTB is effectively used inside and outside social media platforms. So, what does this acronym mean, and where does it come from? Read this article till the end to find out.

What is the Meaning of DTB?

Are you wondering what does DTB mean?

DTB stands for “Don’t Text Back”. It is most commonly used if you want to discourage someone from texting or connecting with you on your phone or social media platforms. In this case, you are too bothered to even reply or reciprocate to that person/message. Hence, you use DTB as a resort. DTB is used on many social media platforms to keep the conversation one-sided – at least for a bit.

The information there is for you to see, and the person who sends it to you doesn’t want you to comment on it yet or vice versa. While DTB can be used when communicating on social media platforms like Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, or more, it is most commonly used while text messaging.

If you are too occupied to reply to any text or don’t want to engage yourself in communication with someone, you can use DTB. If they know, they might stop texting you further. While this acronym is a great way to let others know that you cannot communicate with them at that moment, we advise you to use this term for those who may be aware of its existence and meaning.

Another Meaning of DTB

We have already mentioned the standard meaning of DTB, but do you know many people are using it in an entirely different context?

As per the reports, the credit for introducing DTB in another context goes to the rapper Julius Dubose. Also known as A Boogie Wit a Hoodie, Julius composed a song called DTB 4 Life in 2020. In that song, the rapper rapped about his trust issues with relationships and even with himself. His composition spread the acronym like wildfire across social media, especially TikTok.

Consequently, many TikTokers started using the acronym with their videos while talking about the incidents of their lives – failed relationships, painful breakups, cheating, and other setbacks. One of the users uploaded a video holding the chin of a man with the caption “Don’t Trust Boys” – an entirely different meaning of the acronym. There’s another meaning of DTB – “Don’t Trust Bitches”.

Another video featured a user lying in bed with another girl while their girlfriend called surfaced on the social media platform. The video garnered many comments mentioning the hashtag.

Thus, TikTok took the entire meaning of DTB to another level.

An Acronym with Multiple Interpretations

So far, there have been multiple interpretations of this acronym, each of which has been gaining a lot of traction on the content app to the extent that the hashtag alone has received 500 million views, followed by heart-breaking emojis and other subsequent reactions. These hashtags have emerged as a way for people to send a message to focus their time on their own progress and not waste it on any unfruitful romantic relationship.

So far, millions of TikTokers have used these hashtags, and it has even brought out the dark and complicated side of the millennial and Gen-Z life.
