ATLANTA – The NFL has been buzzing lately with an interesting question: Where’s Taylor Swift? Her iconic presence, particularly at games involving the Kansas City Chiefs, adds a captivating storyline, especially due to her relationship with star tight end Travis Kelce. Swift’s appearances, often seen cheering in a private box alongside Brittany Mahomes, have become a fan-favorite moment during the Chiefs’ games.
However, amid the excitement surrounding this pop culture phenomenon, many football enthusiasts are starting to wonder about another pressing topic: What’s going on with Travis Kelce himself?
For those who might be concerned, there’s no immediate cause for alarm. Despite Kelce’s lackluster performance over the Chiefs’ 3-0 start, this situation doesn’t seem to pose a significant threat to their hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions—at least not yet.
From a fantasy football perspective, the stakes might feel higher. In the first three games, Kelce has managed only eight receptions for 69 yards and is still on the hunt for his first touchdown of the season.
During a closely contested 22-17 victory against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night, Kelce was targeted five times by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, ultimately catching four passes for just 30 yards. This production is a notable departure from his past performance, as the 34-year-old has averaged around 100 catches and 52 touchdowns in the previous six seasons.
A key moment in the game occurred early in the fourth quarter. On a crucial third-and-2, Mahomes attempted to connect with Kelce, but the pass was intercepted by Jessie Bates III, a standout safety known for his playmaking skills. The play exemplified how defenses are focusing on Kelce this season.
Fans may be worrying unnecessarily, though. When approached in the locker room post-game, Kelce responded with a laid-back attitude, saying, “Just living the dream, bro.”
However, as Kelce tried to leave, a Chiefs security guard intervened, obstructing the possibility of him answering the media’s questions after the game—a move reminiscent of defensive strategies on the field. This incident reflected the increasing scrutiny on Kelce, who has become a media magnet due to his high-profile relationship.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared insights on the situation. “It’s crazy,” Mahomes stated regarding the attention Kelce draws from opposing defenses. “The respect factor they have for Travis is unreal. It’s well-deserved.”
Mahomes emphasized that despite the dip in Kelce’s statistical production, he remains integral to the team and is constantly contributing to the success of the game. “We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis. It’s like two or three people are going to him,” Mahomes noted. “He understands…He wants to impact the game. He wants to win at the end of the day.”
Though Kelce’s recent stats might be disappointing for fantasy football players, his overall importance on the field can’t be overstated. He played 54 of the 74 offensive snaps during the Falcons game (77%). Only Mahomes and the starting offensive line played more snaps than him. His contributions extend beyond receiving, as he’s also known for his skills as a blocker in the running game, demonstrating his value as a complete tight end.
Fans are reminded to keep faith. Last season, Kelce started poorly after missing the first game before bouncing back with impressive performances, tallying 17 catches in his first three outings and experiencing a scoring drought in the final regular-season games. But when it mattered most in the playoffs, Kelce delivered standout performances, including a notable game with 11 receptions and a touchdown in the AFC title match.
As the season progresses, the Chiefs are working to integrate other emerging talents. Second-year receiver Rashee Rice had his second 100-yard game this past Sunday, demonstrating that as he and first-round pick Xavier Worthy make plays, Kelce’s opportunities might eventually increase. Mahomes commented on this balance, stating, “I’m going to do my best to keep feeding him the ball whenever he’s there…People are really emphasizing trying to take him away, and it’s getting other guys open.”
The Chiefs appear to be navigating their early-season challenges while maintaining a winning record. Even with Kelce’s limited numbers, the team seems to have the kind of problem that many others would welcome—the luxury of figuring out their game without a fully firing Travis Kelce. And who knows? As the season unfolds, both Kelce and the Chiefs might find their rhythm.
