On November 16, 1973, in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, Christian Horner was born. A large portion of the racing community believes that Horner was born into a family that has been active in the automotive industry for generations.

While at Standard Motor Co. in Coventry, Christian’s grandpa worked as a buying manager and subsequently formed an agency with his son (Christian’s father) that supplied components for English Midlands carmakers. Garry Horner and Christian Horner founded Arden International, a company that owns many Formula One racing teams.

A kart was the first vehicle Christian Horner rode in, and his mother, Sara Horner, was the one who purchased it for him. He was raised by his two older brothers, Jamie and Guy Horner.

Christian attended Arnold Lodge School, a private school in his hometown, for his schooling. He also attended Warwick School as a student. Horner left school to pursue his lifelong dream of racing karts full-time after discovering his talent for the sport while still a high school student.

Horner began his racing career in 1991 after winning a Formula Renault scholarship. He participated in the British Formula Renault Championship a year later, in 1992. He moved up to British Formula Three the following year, placing second in the Class B Championship with P1 Motorsport, where he won five races. In one interview, he claims that he started the team with borrowed money, including a loan from his father, persuaded P1 Motorsport founder Roly Vincini to become his race engineer, and bought a used trailer for the team from Helmut Marko. As the head of the Red Bull Junior Team, the latter was one of Horner’s main F3000 rivals.

After the season, Horner decided to withdraw from racing to concentrate on expanding the Arden team after feeling that he was not as fast as the best of the drivers he was competing against.
