Marvel’s Eternals is expected to have a “very big effect” on the future of the MCU, but That doesn’t necessarily mean that Marvel’s next blockbuster is going to have its own sequels..
At least that’s what producer Nate Moore says, who recently spoke with The Toronto Sun about the ambitious MCU blockbuster directed by Chloé Zhao. At the interview, Moore reiterated that Eternals is intended to be a standalone film and that it does not have to lead to future sequels or a trilogy. like some of the Marvel installments that precede it.
“It is not something that is essential. Obviously, we have ideas of where we could go, but there is no rule in which we have to have three films and this is the first“Moore said of the possible aftermath, adding that”If you only watch Eternals, you can enjoy Eternals, you can understand Eternals, and you’re good to go.“
“We felt that there was enough history that it could be a contained universe.“explains Moore, referring to the reason for the independent nature of Eternals.” DWe definitely have ideas of how things might cross over later. But this movie with 10 characters and Dane Whitman and the Celestials and the Deviants, there was enough for us to play.“
Despite being seen as an independent entity, Eternals has some connections to previous MCU movies. In one of the latest trailers for the film, Richard Madden’s Ikaris can be heard uttering his own take on the iconic Avengers catchphrase, which was uttered as a famous battle cry to rally all of Earth’s heroes.
Eternals’ nods to Avengers: Endgame in particular help focus its location on the MCU tapestry, with Celestials-created superheroes forced to deal with “an unexpected tragedyChloé Zhao’s movie is also expected to address the reason the Eternals didn’t help the Avengers fight Thanos.
While a sequel may or may not be among the upcoming shared universe premieres, Eternals actor Kit Harington has already expressed his wish that his character, Dane Whitman (aka Black Knight in the comics), have “a longer trajectory“at the UCM, although he acknowledges that he is portraying “the human character of the story“.
Eternals will be released in theaters this Friday, November 5, and it will be the new movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
