The Mar Menor has been the stage in which the Spanish photographer noticed Angel Fitor to capture a spectacular sunset which was accompanied by several jellyfish doing a kind of ballet. With this beautiful image, he has been declared the winner of the prestigious international competition ‘European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021’ (‘2021 European Wildlife Photography Awards’).
The Spanish beat more than thousand photographers from 36 countries and took first place in the ‘European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021’ awards. The photo was taken seven years ago, in 2014, before the destruction of the lagoon ecosystem. In fact, the photographer blames poor agricultural planning and overconstruction of the tourism sector for the slow decline of aquatic life. Fitor used multiple flash triggers to create the illusion of a swarm, though there were actually only two jellyfish in the water before him.
Judge Jim Brandenburg commented that “the powerful image spoke strongly to jurors on many levels, and following the ecological catastrophe that occurred shortly after at the site where it was taken […] the winning photo also talks about the huge environmental problems of this region«.
