Yankuba Minteh Reveals Liverpool Inspiration Following Transfer Deal

Yankuba Minteh Reveals Liverpool Inspiration Following Transfer Deal

Brighton & Hove Albion’s new winger, Yankuba Minteh, is an ardent admirer of former Liverpool star Sadio Mane, whom he cites as his “inspiration.”

The 19-year-old recently completed a $41 million move to Brighton, trading Tyneside for the southern coast of England. Despite his time with Newcastle United, Minteh never had the opportunity to play for the Magpies.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had expressed interest in assessing Minteh during pre-season, especially after his notable loan period under the new Liverpool boss Arne Slot at Feyenoord. However, concerns related to Player Status Rules (PSR) led the Magpies to opt for a sale of the Gambian talent.

Minteh attracted attention from multiple clubs, including Liverpool. He will now continue his development at Brighton, working under Fabian Hurzeler.

In his debut appearance as a Brighton player, Minteh was prominently featured on the Seagulls’ social media channels. Their TikTok account engaged him in a fun game, asking him to stay silent until he heard the name of his favorite Premier League player from Africa.

The game commenced with several names: first Yakubu, then former Reds defender Kolo Toure, followed by Michael Essien, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Jay-Jay Okocha, Riyad Mahrez, and Didier Drogba. Each failed to evoke a reaction from Minteh.

Even Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and ex-Arsenal striker Kanu didn’t make the cut. However, upon hearing the name of ex-Liverpool star Mane, Minteh’s face lit up. “Yeah, he’s my inspiration,” declared the Brighton winger, smiling broadly.

If Brighton has acquired a player even remotely close to Mane’s caliber at his peak, they have indeed secured an impressive prospect. Reds manager Slot is well-aware of Minteh’s potential, having overseen his development at Feyenoord. During his tenure there, Minteh played 37 matches, netting 11 goals and providing six assists.

Taking into account Brighton’s diligent recruitment strategies over recent seasons, their decision to invest $41 million in a 19-year-old speaks volumes about their confidence in Minteh’s abilities.

While there was no concrete interest from Liverpool, Everton, Lyon, and Nottingham Forest all made inquiries about the promising Gambian, indicating his significant potential.
