Acclaimed director Zack Snyder is set to wow audiences once again with his next sci-fi film, Rebel Moon. In a recent interview with Empire (via ComicBook), Snyder shared details about the influences that shaped this project, revealing that he found inspiration in two classics of the sword and sorcery genre: Conan the Barbarian (70%) and Excalibur (82%).

Rebel Moon, which will premiere on Netflix later this year, is an epic film set in unknown times and galaxies. Snyder has meticulously built this project over time, following his foray into the DC Universe (Man of Steel (55%), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (27%), Justice League of Zack Snyder (82%)) and his success with the zombie franchise (The Army of the Dead (78%)). His love for Star Wars has also influenced this new creation, although he originally presented the idea to Lucasfilm before Disney acquired the company and embarked on new projects for the galactic saga.

In the interview, Snyder mentioned two specific Rebel characters Moon that reflect the influences of Conan the Barbarian and Excalibur. The first is a robot named Jimmy, voiced by Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins. According to Snyder, Jimmy bears traits of the Knights of the Round Table and, in particular, of Lancelot, a prominent character in the movie Excalibur. The second character, named Milius and played by E. Duffy, is named after both Conan the Barbarian writer-director John Milius and filmmaker Mike Mills. Snyder suggests that Milius is comparable to the character of Percival in the Arthurian stories.
Rebel Moon may have been produced by Lucasfilm at an earlier time, but due to changes at the company, the film finally found its home on Netflix.
Snyder sees Rebel Moon as the start of a potential franchise, filled with original worlds, characters, and stories. Rebel Moon follows the story of the inhabitants of a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy who face the threat of a tyrannical leader. To combat this oppression, a young woman named Kora embarks on a mission to recruit warriors from other worlds and join forces against Regent Ballsarius.
