100 Years Quest: “The Sea of Dragons”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Natsu and his friends venture underwater to find and seal the Water God Dragon, though they are uncertain about what exactly “seal” means. Their quest takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Kiria, a Dragon Slayer from the Fifth Generation who gains power by eating dragons. Kiria is a member of the guild Diabolos. Soon after, they meet the Water God Dragon himself, Mercphobia. At the same time, Jellal starts investigating Touka, a mysterious girl who recently appeared at Fairy Tail’s base.

OUR TAKEThe quest kicks off with the group reaching their first destination. The setting is intriguing, featuring inhabitants who turn into fish at night, and an undersea environment where the characters can swim freely. Once they become fish-like themselves, the situation adds an interesting twist. However, compared to the original series, the opening arcs of this sequel feel less elaborate and not as well thought-out. As a sequel, it seems more like a side story rather than a continuation of the main plot.

The characters appear unchanged from the last time we saw them, making it feel like not much has progressed since the original series ended. This familiarity could be comforting but it doesn’t foster much excitement for future developments in this new series. That being said, it’s still early, and there are plotlines just starting to unfold, so time will tell where this goes.

The team’s differing opinions on what “sealing” the Water God Dragon means adds some layers to the narrative, reflecting their personal viewpoints. It could lead to some dynamic shifts among the characters. The Dragon Slayer aspect remains intriguing. The original series introduced us to Dragon Slayer Magic through characters like Natsu, Wendy, and Gajeel. Although I discontinued watching before meeting the Saber Tooth guild, I am aware they were of the Third Generation. Now, with the introduction of the Fifth Generation featuring Kiria and Madmole from the Diabolos guild, there’s an interesting expansion of this lore.

Given that Kiria and Madmole are likely the antagonists for this arc, their Fifth Generation abilities offer a fresh perspective on Dragon Slayer Magic. Adding to this, Mercphobia, the dragon in human form, adds another layer of complexity to the unfolding story. These elements together create enough intrigue to keep viewers engaged, at least for now.
