19-Year-Old Cadet Discovered Dead in Dorm at U.S. Air Force Academy

An alarming incident has occurred at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, where a 19-year-old cadet was discovered dead in her dormitory room. Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce was found unconscious late Wednesday night, prompting immediate response from academy first responders.

Despite their best efforts to revive her, the attempts at life-saving measures were unsuccessful, as confirmed by the academy in a post on Facebook. The institution has now launched an investigation to determine the cause of her untimely death, but no updates have been provided at this time.

Avery was part of the class of 2028 and actively participated in the academy’s women’s track and field team. Her sudden passing has left the tight-knit community in mourning.

Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, the Academy Superintendent, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “We lost an incredible teammate last night. While only with us for a short time, Avery positively impacted her unit, her intercollegiate team, and her class — her loss will be felt across USAFA.”

Avery hailed from Taylor, Texas, and was recognized as a distinguished graduate of Thrall High School in 2024. Her bright future had promised much, including aspirations of becoming a pilot.

Texas Congressman Pete Sessions, who had nominated Avery for the academy, spoke fondly of her potential, noting her as an “exceptional leader” and “talented athlete.” He shared, “I was incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of USAFA Cadet Avery Koonce. It was my honor to nominate Cadet Koonce to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she had begun her studies, planning to major in biology and minor in kinesiology with hopes of becoming a pilot physical therapist.”

In light of this tragic event, the U.S. Air Force Academy has announced that it will offer support services to cadets, faculty, and staff to help them cope with the loss of their fellow cadet.

The community is set to remember Avery Koonce, whose life and ambitions resonated with many at the academy. While investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death continue, the impact she made in her brief time there is deeply acknowledged and appreciated.
