4 Must-See Movies Premiering This Fall

With one exception ( Deadpool & Wolverine ), I haven’t been to the movies in quite a while due to the widespread mediocrity and general lack of originality in Hollywood’s recent offerings. Fortunately, it seems the drought is over. A slew of top-tier and genuinely interesting movies are on the horizon, and they’re not packed with superheroes or uninspired projects from directors scraping the bottom of the creativity barrel.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. To the theater, that is. These upcoming movies guarantee that I’ll visit my local multiplex at least four more times in the coming months, and I suspect I won’t be the only one feeling this way.

First up is a new feature film called My Old Ass , written and directed by Megan Park, and starring Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza. The film revolves around a brilliantly simple idea: What if you could come face-to-face with an older version of yourself? Park’s story is a coming-of-age gem that stirs deep emotions, and the two lead actresses are perfectly cast. Plaza portrays the 39-year-old version of Elliott, who encounters her younger, free-spirited self during an 18th birthday mushroom trip. This quirky yet heartwarming narrative prompts Elliott to rethink everything about family, love, and her transformative summer.

Next, I’m particularly excited about an indie film from Neon, often described as this year’s Uncut Gems . It tells the story of a sex worker who marries the drug-addled heir of a Russian oligarch. Mark Eydelshteyn plays the heir, delivering a performance drawing comparisons to Timothée Chalamet. Mikey Madison stars as Ani, the sex worker, whose blend of street smarts, romantic naivety, and effortless charm wins audiences over quickly. This film promises to find heart and humanity in the most unexpected places.

Another film I’m eagerly anticipating is Conclave , directed by Edward Berger, who helmed the hauntingly unforgettable World War I movie, All Quiet on the Western Front , for Netflix. Based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel, the movie dives into Vatican politics and follows the intricate process of electing a new Pope after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Ralph Fiennes stars as Cardinal Lawrence, who discovers a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Church.

Finally, there’s a sequel to one of the most iconic films of the 2000s – the original Gladiator . Directed by Ridley Scott, this continuation promises to revisit the story of late-era Rome at the height of its decadence and corruption. Paul Mescal stars as Lucius, who battles in the Colosseum and looks to his past to restore Rome’s glory. The original film’s epic narrative, captivating cinematography, and stirring soundtrack set high expectations for this sequel. Can lightning strike the same place twice? I can’t wait to find out.

If there’s one thing to highlight, it’s that there will be water battles in the Colosseum this time around. Let the games begin.
