5 Essential Country Cheatin’ Songs Released This Year

The ladies of country music always deliver the goods — that’s a given. But this year, they’ve stepped up with particular ferocity, especially with some scorn-filled songs that perfectly capture the anguish and urge for revenge that come after being cheated on. Cheating songs have been a staple of the country genre for decades, and they remain some of my favorite types, along with the saddest of sad country ballads, of course. The timeless adage “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” rings exceptionally true here. Despite never having been cheated on, there’s something universally powerful about the emotions conveyed in a cheating song. Perhaps there’s some science behind it, but nothing feels more empowering than belting out an intense country betrayal anthem at full volume.

There’s a universal feeling of being wronged when you didn’t deserve it. Whether in romantic relationships or other types, this sentiment is at the heart of every great cheating song. This year, some of the most incredible ladies at the forefront of country music have released some outstanding, therapeutic cheating songs. I sifted through my playlist and picked my top five to share with you, hoping one of these tunes hits the right note for you, as they have for me. Trust me, they’re tried and tested in the car, windows down on a back road (not as cliché as it sounds), and they’ve saved me a ton in therapy costs. They just get it. While the guys have put out some fantastic ones too, these resonate with me on a different level.

First up is “Alimony” by Miranda Lambert. She’s the queen of scorned country songs and has been at it better than anyone for over two decades. “Alimony” is a boot-stompin’, throwback-style country song that fits perfectly in massive arenas or small honky-tonk beer joints. It sees Miranda confronting a marriage on the brink of collapse, consoled only by the thought of a substantial alimony payment should divorce be inevitable. This is Miranda at her best, and her authenticity shines through. Can’t wait for the rest of her forthcoming album, Postcards from Texas, dropping next month. Check it out: here.

Then there’s “Truck On Fire” by Carly Pearce. Quickly one of my favorites of 2024, Carly brings humor to the song, a standout from her recent hummingbird project. It’s a brazen, sassy number where Carly calls out a cheating man, ignorant enough to think she wouldn’t find out. Carly is ready to take matters into her own hands, making this an addictive repeat-listen. Listen to it here: here.

Moving on to “I Know You” by Megan Moroney. Written by Megan along with several talented folks, this song calls out an ex for playing her, revealing his duplicity during their supposedly exclusive relationship. As relatable as it is heartbreaking, Megan’s catchy tune encapsulates that painful awareness and the struggle to move on. Check it out: here.

Next is “Better Be Tough” by Ella Langley. From her debut album hungover, Ella flips the script by calling out her cheating ex instead of wallowing in sadness. Written with Will Bundy, Erik Dylan, and Brett James, the song offers a brilliant blend of humor and revenge plans. This song is pure gold, promising loads of laughter and strength. You can hear it live: here.

Finally, we have “Ring Finger” by Lainey Wilson. This recent release from her fifth studio album, Whirlwind, sees Lainey confronting her cheating ex-fiancé. Finding evidence of his betrayal, she kicks him to the curb, keeping the ring and giving him the finger. With signature Lainey wit, this song feels like a classic, seamlessly blending old-school country vibes with a modern twist. Listen to it: here.
