In the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) embraced his role as the new Captain America. Over three years have passed since the Disney+ series ended, and fans finally get a sneak peek at his ongoing adventures in the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World .

The teaser is brimming with action, explosions, and new characters without giving away too much of the actual plot. While more details will likely be revealed in forthcoming trailers, the teaser offers some intriguing insights into the upcoming Marvel movie.

In the trailer’s opening moments, Sam jokes with President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) about “the new look.” The late William Hurt, who played Ross in five MCU films, passed away in 2022. It’s not the first time Marvel has recast a major character; Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle for the role of War Machine.

After Ross inquires about Captain America becoming an official military position again, a few unfamiliar characters appear on screen. The first is Ruth Bat-Seraph (Shira Haas), a high-ranking government official and former Black Widow. Haas was initially cast as Israeli superhero Sabra, but in light of recent world events, Marvel reportedly rewrote the character to avoid controversy.

The trailer also features a rifle-wielding Giancarlo Esposito. While Marvel hasn’t officially disclosed his character, one recent rumor suggests he will portray George Washington Bridge, a mercenary who eventually joins S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics.

Since Eternals premiered in 2021, fans have wondered why the giant, four-eyed Celestial protruding from the ocean hasn’t been a bigger focus in the MCU. It appears this celestial being will finally make its return in Brave New World , as an enormous structure in the ocean is shown early in the trailer.

If you were unsure about the significance of remembering events from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , one shot in the trailer confirms its importance. Alongside Anthony Mackie, we see Danny Ramirez reprising his role as Joaquin Torres (the new Falcon) and Carl Lumbly as retired super-soldier Isaiah Bradley, who is attempting to assassinate the president.

The true villain of Brave New World is Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. The character made his first appearance in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk . Halfway through the trailer, viewers get a glimpse of the back of his green head, as he ominously states over the phone, “Global power is shifting. You’re just a pawn.”

Lastly, the reveal many fans anticipated is here: President Ross will transform into Red Hulk at some point in Brave New World . While bearing a strong resemblance to Bruce Banner’s Hulk, Red Hulk has unique abilities such as absorbing gamma radiation and emitting optic beams. This transformation indicates he will be quite a formidable opponent for Captain America.
