Aaron Rodgers Expects ‘Greatness’ in His Comeback Season with Jets

Days ahead of his 20th NFL season, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in high spirits, even joking about his Achilles injury from the previous season. Now fully healed, the confident veteran is gearing up for what he believes will be a remarkable comeback.

Rodgers, now 40 years old and the league’s oldest player, shared his expectations ahead of facing the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. This game falls just two days shy of the one-year anniversary of his Achilles tear, an injury that cut short the Jets’ aspirations last season after just four plays.

With a grin, Rodgers remarked about his past injury, hinting that there might be a small smile as he steps onto the field again, recalling that fateful fourth snap.

Having not played a full game in 20 months, since his last appearance with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers is eager to take the field. While he opted out of the preseason, he managed to log around 800 practice reps during training camp.

Despite his impressive resume, which includes four MVP awards and one Super Bowl victory, Rodgers feels a personal responsibility to prove himself once again. “I’ve always kind of played with something on my shoulder,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of self-validation over external opinions.

The Jets, who are aiming for a Super Bowl run this season, are placing significant faith in Rodgers and his abilities. Head coach Robert Saleh noted, “I think he’s in a great place,” commending both his mental and physical condition as he prepares for the game.

Rodgers demonstrated impressive throwing mechanics during camp. However, his agility and movement in the pocket especially impressed his teammates, indicating that he has fully recovered from the Achilles injury. Yet, the true test would come against a live pass rush, which he has yet to face.

Regarding the team’s goals, Rodgers expressed optimism about the Jets’ Super Bowl potential. He lauded the team’s strengthened offensive line and maturity within the locker room, believing these factors will help them navigate the challenges of a long season.

“We can’t ride these waves of emotion or frustration or outside narratives,” he said, highlighting the need for unity as the team faces obstacles ahead.

Rodgers previously emphasized the importance of focus, especially after statements he made last season regarding distractions. His commitment appears to have redirected toward purely football since then, according to his colleagues.

“I’m in a good mind space,” Rodgers shared, reflecting on a turbulent yet meaningful year. He expressed appreciation for the chance to compete again, noting moments of gratitude during the National Anthem where he contemplates the privilege of being back on the field.

On the team’s roster, a potential absence looms over Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick, who is currently holding out in pursuit of a new contract. Since joining the Jets from the Philadelphia Eagles in March, Reddick has not engaged in any team activities.

Saleh remained hopeful about Reddick’s availability for Monday night, mentioning there is still a chance for him to participate if he returns to practice. “It’s feasible,” he said, citing examples of other experienced players who have managed to prepare in brief timeframes.
