Acclaimed Actor Joins Cast of ‘Slow Horses’ for Season 4

Apple TV+’s series “Slow Horses” may progress at a deliberate pace, but it remains relentless in its storytelling. Featuring British Intelligence tales of deceit and danger, the show is back with more twists as it moves closer to its recently secured fifth season. Season 4 of “Slow Horses” kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 4, with its first two episodes available on Apple TV+.

The eagerly awaited Season 4 trailer gives fans a taste of what’s to come: a serial bomber threatening London, a death within the Slough House team, and the introduction of new character Frank Harkness.

Played by Hugo Weaving, known for iconic roles such as V in “V for Vendetta,” Agent Smith in the original Matrix trilogy, and Elrond in “The Lord of the Rings,” Harkness is touted as a significant addition to the Apple TV+ series. ScreenRant’s Sarah Little believes that Weaving’s character could well become the most compelling villain the show has ever seen.

Gary Oldman, the show’s leading man, is equally thrilled to return. Fans remember Oldman from roles in “Darkest Hour” and other impactful films, but he expressed a special fondness for his television role. “Some of the best stuff you see is on your television screen,” Oldman remarked at a TV news event, sharing his love for long-form storytelling.

During the same event, IndieWire’s Ben Travers reported in May that Oldman was eager to explore a character over multiple episodes, something he hadn’t done before. “Slow Horses” provided that opportunity, marking his first leading TV role. With the show being renewed for a fifth season, Oldman will continue playing the disgraced MI5 agent Jackson Lamb, a role he cherishes.

“If they’re [Apple TV+] happy to keep us on the air, then I’m very happy to do all eight books,” Oldman said during a press junket. “And since we started, [Herron] has written another one, so who knows? Maybe it’ll be nine books, and I’ll be happy to play Jackson Lamb [in all of them].”

His co-star Jack Lowden, known from films like “Dunkirk,” appreciates the series’ distinctive sense of humor. Playing River Cartwright, an up-and-coming MI5 officer, Lowden shared that the humor in the script was a major draw for him, despite not having read the books.

“It was so bizarre and so wonderful to think of what is essentially like a work-based thriller where everybody’s a little bit bad at what they do,” Lowden shared in an interview with Awards Radar.

“Slow Horses” Season 4 sees the return of various esteemed actors, including Saskia Reeves, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christopher Chung, Rosalind Eleazar, Sophie Okonedo, Samuel West, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Kadiff Kirwan, Ruth Bradley, Joanna Scanlan, Tom Brooke, and James Callis. The ensemble cast continues to bring Mick Herron’s Slough House series to life with engaging storylines and complex characters.
