Tim Blake Nelson is addressing film legend Martin Scorsese‘s distaste for Marvel movies, expressing respect for the director but disagreeing with his views.
The actor, known for his role in the 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” spoke to Variety about why he believes Marvel films qualify as cinema, contrary to Scorsese’s opinion.
Nelson argues that Marvel movies transport viewers back to their youth, allowing them to fully immerse in the experience. Though he acknowledges that these films may not reach the same level as “Goodfellas” — a nod to Scorsese’s work — he maintains that they are great in their own right, as they aim to entertain.
The discussion about the MCU is timely for Nelson, who is officially joining it in next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World.”
Nelson’s role in the 2008 ‘Hulk’ movie was meant to be part of the early MCU, following “Iron Man.” However, the film was later scrapped, and Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner was recast with Mark Ruffalo.
Nelson shared that he worried about never getting closure for his character, Samuel Sterns, and got emotional after completing this journey nearly two decades later.
Scorsese’s criticism of the MCU is well-known, and other stars have recently voiced similar sentiments. Jamie Lee Curtis has even stated that the quality of these films has declined.
Though Curtis later apologized for her comments, Ryan Reynolds, known for his role in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” defended her. As a result, the debate over the value of Marvel movies continues with divided opinions among stars.
It seems opinions remain split among Hollywood stars on this topic, sparking an ongoing discussion.
