Adrian Peterson Ordered to Surrender Assets for $12M Debt Payment

Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a judge in Houston to surrender several assets to address a significant debt exceeding $12 million.

The order, initiated by court-appointed receiver Robert Berleth back in July, cited Peterson’s well-known ownership of various assets at his residence in Missouri City, Texas. On Monday, the judge directed constables from Fort Bend County, Texas, to accompany Berleth to ensure security during the asset recovery process.

Peterson’s financial troubles traced back to 2016 when he took out a loan for $5.2 million from a lending firm based in Pennsylvania. Over the years, this amount ballooned due to accruing interest and legal fees, ultimately leading to an $8.3 million judgment against him in 2021.

“No offsets have been made against this judgment to date,” the receiver noted in a court filing made in July, underscoring the persistence of Peterson’s financial woes.

Now 39 years old, Peterson’s professional football career saw its last season in the NFL during 2021. Renowned for his explosive performance on the field, he was named the NFL MVP in 2012. Throughout his 15-year career, he garnered multiple accolades, including being a four-time All-Pro and a seven-time Pro Bowl selection. He also led the league in rushing yards on three separate occasions.

As one of the most distinguished players in NFL history, Peterson stands fifth on the all-time rushing yards list, amassing a total of 14,918 yards and 90 touchdowns over the course of 184 games—167 of which he started—playing for seven teams during his career, with the Minnesota Vikings being the most prominent, where he played from 2007 to 2016.
