Adrianne Curry Calls Marriage to Christopher Knight a ‘Train Wreck’

Adrianne Curry once believed that true happiness meant marriage and children, but her perspective changed after meeting her second husband, Matthew Rhode.

Fresh off her win in America’s Next Top Model cycle 1, Curry got engaged to Christopher Knight after they met on season 4 of Surreal Life in 2004. At the time, Curry was 23, and Knight, known for his role as Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch, was 48.

Their relationship soon attracted significant media attention, leading them to star in their own VH1 reality series, My Fair Brady. The couple married in 2006, but after five years of marriage and three seasons of documenting their tumultuous relationship, they separated in May 2011 and filed for divorce shortly afterward.

While Curry has some regrets, she told PEOPLE that she is grateful for the experience because it led her to find the love she’s always wanted. Reflecting on the years of filming their private life, Curry said, “It was very difficult to have a relationship on TV. Most people would say we were a complete train wreck, and that was us putting our best foot forward because we knew we were being filmed. So I assure you, it was way worse with the cameras off.”

She isn’t ashamed of her time on America’s Next Top Model but admits to feeling deeply embarrassed about her stint on My Fair Brady. “I feel like I was losing my voice,” she recalls. “I was just becoming this corrupted s—face. But my heart was in the right place. I thought I was in love, and I wanted to start a family really bad.”

At the time, her friends were starting families, and Curry felt left behind. Winning ANTM threw her off her intended life path, and she notes, “I probably, by 22 years old, would have been married and having babies.”

Curry felt immense pressure to settle down and did so with Knight. In the season 1 finale of My Fair Brady, Knight proposed in a dramatic fashion that made Curry believe she was being evicted before he pulled out a ring. Reflecting on it, Curry tells PEOPLE, “I’ve been proposed to twice. Once, someone made it out like they were dumping me on camera so that I would cry my eyes out. And I said yes, which doesn’t seem very loving. And then the next proposal was a man on his knees, holding my hand in a little tiny hotel room in Kanab, Utah, pouring his heart out to me.”

She laughs as she recounts her first proposal, saying, “I felt so much pressure to have a positive reaction because I was so young and surrounded by cameras. Today, I’d say, ‘F— off. What is this? That’s evil.'”

Curry acknowledges that while she regrets her first marriage, she believes it was a necessary part of her journey. “I put seven years into that relationship, and we both moved on. He’s remarried. I’m married again, and I regret having gotten married. But I have to remind myself I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t do all that stupid s— then.”

Post-divorce, Curry realized she needed someone who valued and adored her as much as she did them. She didn’t want infatuation or to be placed on a pedestal but craved mutual respect. When she met Rhode, a voice actor for movie trailers, she had a list of qualities she didn’t want in a partner due to her past experiences, which made her initially guarded.

Despite her guarded nature, Rhode stuck around, and on September 15, 2018, they exchanged vows in a Game of Thrones-inspired wedding at Glacier National Park in Montana. Only their wedding photographer attended.

Curry describes Rhode as “the funniest motherf—er on this planet,” saying, “He will make me laugh so hard that my stomach is in knots of pain and I’m sobbing laughing. I know when we can’t have sex anymore and we’re too old to even walk, we’re at least going to be sitting there laughing at each other’s farts. And that’s a beautiful thing.”

Now that she’s found her happy ending, Curry hopes that both she and Knight have learned from their relationship as they build new lives with the right partners. She adds, “I hope he’s happy, wherever he is, and I guess I’m grateful I did it because I wouldn’t have met my husband now. I wish I hadn’t gotten married, but every time I fall into that regret trap, I have to remind myself I wouldn’t be here today if that hadn’t happened.”
