LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aerosmith has announced that Steven Tyler’s voice has been permanently damaged due to a vocal cord injury sustained last year, resulting in the band’s decision to cease touring.

The legendary rock band, famous for classic hits such as “Love in an Elevator” and “Livin’ on the Edge,” shared a statement on Friday disclosing the cancellation of their remaining tour dates and providing an update on Tyler’s condition.

“He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the statement read. “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision — as a band of brothers — to retire from the touring stage.”

Tyler initially injured his vocal cords in September during a performance on their Peace Out: The Farewell Tour. He mentioned in an Instagram post at the time that the injury caused bleeding and had hoped the band would return after a short hiatus.

Tyler’s powerful voice has been a driving force behind Aerosmith’s extensive repertoire of hits since their formation in 1970. Famous tracks like “Dream On,” “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion” have become iconic, with Tyler’s voice being a distinctive element.

The band was in the early stages of a planned 40-date farewell tour when Tyler’s injury occurred.

“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the band expressed in their message to fans.

“It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours,” the band continued. “In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.”

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and winners of four Grammy awards, Aerosmith’s lineup, other than Tyler, includes Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Kramer.
