AI Shows Stunning Real-Life Version of Spirited Away

Studio Ghibli’s distinct art style and its captivating projects have inspired a range of AI-generated artwork. Given the global adoration these films receive, it’s understandable that fans would want to explore alternative creative avenues. However, don’t expect the legendary Hayao Miyazaki to embrace generative AI in his work. Miyazaki has a deep-seated aversion to AI animation. After viewing examples, he remarked, “If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

Miyazaki’s criticism might appear severe, but it comes from a place of deep artistic integrity. His films are known for their intimate exploration of the human experience. Generative AI, in contrast, removes the human touch from art, leaving behind a lifeless imitation of what could have been. While a truly AI-generated Studio Ghibli film is unlikely to materialize, that doesn’t mean “Spirited Away” has been confined solely to the animated world.

In 2022, a live-action stage production of “Spirited Away” debuted in Japan. For those who can’t catch a live show, “Spirited Away: Live on Stage” is now available to stream on Max.

“Spirited Away” has mesmerized audiences around the globe, achieving a rare level of affection and admiration. The story itself feels almost complete, making additional adaptations seemingly unnecessary. The original movie is already a masterpiece that stands on its own.
