Al Roker’s Wife Shares Family ‘Season of Sadness’ During His Absence

Al Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts have experienced a challenging few months, as Deborah revealed in a heartfelt video on social media.

The ABC news reporter took to Instagram to share a personal update with her followers while spending time at home with family during the Labor Day weekend.

She apologized for her recent absence, stating it has been a “season of sadness.”

In June, Al and Deborah’s beloved family dog, Pepper, passed away, marking a difficult period for them. Additionally, Deborah’s brother has been ill, and she mourned the loss of a dear friend.

Deborah explained, “As you all know, I lost my beloved Pepper, and that was very, very hard. Right on the heels of that, I lost a very dear friend, and on the heels of that, my brother was also very ill. So, I had a number of things happening at one time, and it just kind of walloped me.”

Adding to their emotional journey, they had to say a sad goodbye to their youngest son, Nick, at the end of August as they dropped him off at college.

Deborah shared a photo on Instagram, hugging Nick goodbye, writing, “Well, that’s that. Move in, done. Nest is empty again.”

“Certainly not as bad as year one. Yet, our hearts are sagging a bit. But his smile ensures that we will all be okay. Here’s to a great junior year, Nick. #emptynest #college #drop.”

Al also posted several photos from the drop-off, captioning, “Dropped Nick off this afternoon. Hard to believe we have a college junior!! House is a little too quiet.”

Despite these challenges, the couple has found joy through their granddaughter, Sky.

This weekend, they enjoyed a getaway from New York City to their country house, spending quality time with loved ones, including the youngest family member, Sky.

Al took some time off from the Today Show, with Dylan Dreyer filling in for him. During this break, he shared photos of himself with a beaming Sky, captioning, “I can’t help but smile when I am around Sky Roker Laga. This kiddo brings such joy. I am definitely not laboring on this day to smile. It just comes naturally.”

Sky, the daughter of Al’s oldest child Courtney, is a source of immense happiness for the couple.

Al and Courtney share a close bond and have collaborated on a cookbook titled “Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By.” They plan to embark on a book tour across the United States next month to promote it.
