Alaska Landslide Claims One Life, Injures at Least Three Others

Mandatory evacuations have been initiated in the city of Ketchikan, located in southeastern Alaska, following a devastating landslide that destroyed several homes and businesses. At least one individual has lost their life, and multiple others have suffered injuries as a result of the incident that occurred on Sunday.

The landslide was triggered around 4 p.m. local time when part of the hillside collapsed, causing significant damage to local roads and disrupting power to many residents. Mayor Dave Kiffer expressed his sorrow, stating, “In my 65 years in Ketchikan, I have never seen a slide of this magnitude. The loss of life that we have encountered is heartbreaking, and my heart goes out to those who lost their homes.”

According to city officials, at least one person has died, and three individuals were transported to a hospital to receive treatment for their injuries. As of early Monday morning, emergency dispatchers confirmed to USA TODAY that no further injuries had been reported.

The exact number of people who have been displaced due to the landslide remains unclear. Officials indicated that a potential secondary landslide area has been identified to the south of the original site, and emergency crews are on standby in response.

In light of the disaster, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a state of emergency for Ketchikan. The governor stated via social media, “All state agencies are directed to provide whatever assistance is needed. My thoughts and prayers are with residents of Ketchikan tonight.”

Senator Dan Sullivan also addressed the situation on social media, emphasizing that a mandatory evacuation order is now in effect for the areas impacted by the landslide. “My team and I stand ready to help facilitate any federal assistance that may be necessary,” he wrote. He noted his discussions with both Borough Mayor Rodney Dial and City Mayor Dave Kiffer regarding recovery efforts. “Our prayers are with the families, the injured, those recovering, and the community,” he added.

To support those affected by the disaster, an emergency shelter has been established at a local high school. City officials have yet to confirm how many residences and businesses are without power, but they anticipate that electricity will be restored in the coming days as safety checks are completed in the impacted areas. The American Red Cross is also present, providing assistance to those in need.

Borough Mayor Rodney Dial expressed gratitude towards the first responders, medical personnel, volunteers, and local businesses aiding in recovery efforts. He urged residents to keep the affected families in their thoughts, stating, “As we work through this, please keep the affected families in your prayers and know we will do everything we can to recover from this event as quickly as possible and help those in need.”

Ketchikan itself is situated just north of Pennock Island, near the Canadian border. This city is a popular port on the Inside Passage, known for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant Alaska Native culture. Ketchikan has often been recognized for its rich salmon population and picturesque scenery, drawing tourists to its scenic landscapes.

As the community deals with the aftermath of this tragic event, officials are working tirelessly to restore normalcy and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
