All About Clay, James, and Harry

Annie Potts is best known for her role as a loving mom and grandma on Young Sheldon. Off-screen, she is equally devoted to her three children: Clay, James, and Harry.

Potts first became a mother in 1981 when she and her former husband, B. Scott Senechal, welcomed their son Clay. After their separation, she married James Hayman, an Emmy-nominated director and producer. They had two sons together, James in 1992 and Harry in 1995.

Despite achieving early success with Ghostbusters and Designing Women, Potts decided to slow down her career to focus on raising her boys. The siblings, despite their age gaps, have developed strong relationships with each other.

“Now that they’re proper grown-ups, they’re really close,” Potts shared on the Really Famous podcast in 2019. “Their relationships are everything I’d hoped — they love each other, they support each other, they make each other laugh. The youngest and the oldest are both writers, and they always share their work with each other first.”

Clay Samuel Senechal, 43

Potts and Senechal welcomed Clay Samuel Senechal on April 29, 1981.

While not much is known about his upbringing, Clay did attend the 1989 premiere of Ghostbusters II with his mom. He graduated from Brown University in 2004 with a bachelor’s in English and ventured into the entertainment industry like his mother.

Clay describes himself as a writer, creator, and executive producer, having worked for major studios like DreamWorks, FX, and Prime Video. He even wrote a Netflix animated film in which his mother lent her voice. Potts celebrated his 40th birthday with a proud Instagram post: “My wonderful son Clay turns 40 today. He is everything I dreamed he would be,” she wrote, also promoting his film Arlo the Alligator Boy on Netflix.

In 2022, Clay welcomed a baby boy with his partner, author Anna Carey. “Meemaw 2.0! My firstborn has his firstborn,” Potts announced joyfully on Instagram, sharing pictures of her second grandson and eldest son. “Welcome Silas! My heart is exploding!”

Potts often shares photos of her grandson, including a cute snapshot of him holding a book as an infant. “Silas, (my newest grandson) is quite advanced… 😍,” she joked.

James Powell Hayman, 32

James Powell Hayman, born on May 28, 1992, was inspired by his parents and entered the movie industry. He has worked on the production side of several films and shows, including Lisa Frankenstein, No One Will Save You, Hit Man, and Renfield. He also took part in three episodes of his mom’s show, Young Sheldon, before its conclusion in 2024.

James shared his excitement on Instagram: “RENFIELD COMES OUT TODAY!! My first full staff job as a Background PA, 2.5 long months of nights, some blood (a lot of blood), sweat, and tears poured into this film, and probably one of the hardest productions I’ve ever worked on.”

Besides working behind the camera, James is also a DJ and musician who often promotes his gigs on Instagram. However, his most significant announcement was about becoming a dad. “The Best Song I’ve ever written is coming this summer. Release Date: July, 2021,” he wrote, accompanied by a sonogram photo.

James and his partner Katrina Engle welcomed their son in 2021. Potts was thrilled, sharing on Facebook, “We’ve GOT ONE!!! Introducing our very first grandchild. Cassius James Hayman! 😍 He was born today at 11am and weighs 8 lbs. We are THRILLED!”

Currently, James resides in New Orleans with his family but made a special trip with Cash in November 2022 to celebrate Potts’ birthday. “Popped out to LA to help my Mom celebrate 70 rotations around a hot gas ball in space…but most importantly Cassius got to see his FANCY and meet his new cousin!” he posted on Instagram.

Isaac Harris “Harry” Hayman, 28

Potts and Hayman completed their family with the birth of their second child, Isaac Harris Hayman, known as Harry, on Dec. 27, 1995.

Harry has dabbled in acting with roles in shows like Joan of Arcadia and Hot Hot Los Angeles, but his passion seems to lie in poetry. Though his Instagram is private, he describes himself as a “poet, talker, [and] vigilance relaxed.”

Potts occasionally shares glimpses of their family activities on her Instagram. They went on a diving trip to Anguilla in 2021 and explored England together two years later.

Even though Harry maintains a private life, he accompanied his parents to the 1999 premiere of Toy Story 2, where Potts voiced the character Bo Peep.
