All Box Office Records Broken by the Marvel Movie

Deadpool & Wolverine has emerged as a massive success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), revitalizing the franchise after several challenging years. Just one month post its theatrical release, the film has surpassed the billion-dollar mark at the global box office, reigniting excitement for the MCU and reinstating some long-lost glory from the days of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel films.

Given its monumental achievements, the film’s financial performance is nothing short of staggering. In its opening weekend alone, Deadpool & Wolverine garnered $211.4M domestically and $444.6M internationally. Fast forward one month, and the numbers climbed to an impressive $1.216 billion worldwide, with $581.1M from domestic audiences and $634.8M from international markets. This success has shattered numerous records along the way.

The film achieved the second-largest global opening since Avatar: The Way of Water, amassing $439M, just behind the latter’s $441.7M. For Ryan Reynolds, this marks his biggest domestic opening ever, surpassing the original Deadpool‘s $132.4M and Deadpool 2‘s $125.5M. Hugh Jackman also saw his largest domestic opening, outdoing his previous peak with X-Men: The Last Stand‘s $102.7M.

Director Shawn Levy also achieved a career milestone, surpassing his previous best with Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian‘s $54.1M opening in 2009. Additionally, the film set a new high for the largest domestic July opening weekend, beating out Disney’s 2019 live-action The Lion King, which had previously raked in $191.8M.

As for the X-Men franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine now holds the title of the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office, significantly surpassing X-Men: The Last Stand‘s $234.3M with over $500M. This feat is a testament to the enduring appeal and financial power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe tag.

The film has further cemented the MCU as the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, with $30 billion earned across 34 releases. It maintains a perfect record of 34 consecutive No. 1 debuts at the domestic box office.

Among its numerous accomplishments, Deadpool & Wolverine boasts the highest domestic opening of 2024 so far, eclipsing 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which opened to $260.1M. It’s also the sixth-highest domestic opening weekend of all time with $96M on its first day.

The film ranks fourth for superhero opening weekends, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Infinity War. It also holds the second-highest opening weekend for a third installment film.

Disney continues to dominate box office history with this release, now holding 16 out of the top 20 slots for domestic opening weekends, and the MCU claiming 11 of these positions. Disney also occupies five of the top six highest domestic opening weekends of all time.

Breaking records for R-rated films, Deadpool & Wolverine achieved the highest opening for such a release in the US with an international earnings of $233.1M, surpassing Joker‘s $147M from 2019. It also holds the record for the largest international opening since Avatar: The Way of Water, and the highest opening of 2024 in key markets such as Germany, the UK, Australia, and Japan.

Further adding to its accolades, the film saw the biggest R-rated Monday and Tuesday at the domestic box office, generating $24.4M and $25.3M respectively on these days.

Deadpool & Wolverine remains in theaters and continues to make history with every passing day.
