Not long after Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing captured readers’ hearts in May 2023, the book was optioned for a television series. This announcement came just before the release of the second book in The Empyrean series, Iron Flame, in November 2023.

The adaptation is still in the early development stages, but some progress has been made since the original announcement.

Amazon MGM Studios secured the rights to the first book of The Empyrean series, with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society production company set to produce the television series.

Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her work on Breaking Bad and Anne with an E, has been appointed as the series’ showrunner.

Fourth Wing centers around twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is compelled by her mother to leave her life as a Scribe and train to become a dragon rider. Violet’s mother, a General in the Navarre military, insists she join Basgiath War College, a brutal institution where trainees follow the “Graduate or Die” methodology.

Upon entering Basgiath, Violet first relies on the familiar face of her old friend Dain Aetos, but she also notices the intense gaze of the enigmatic Xaden Riorson. Violet’s character is further enriched by her struggle with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a condition affecting connective tissue, which author Rebecca Yarros also experiences.

The series continues with Iron Flame, released in the same year as Fourth Wing. A five-book arc is planned, with the third installment, Onyx Storm, expected to arrive in January 2025.

If the first season of the Fourth Wing TV series proves successful, it is possible that each book in the series will be adapted into separate seasons.
