An Actor from the Mad Max Saga

Alien isn’t the only franchise initiated by Ridley Scott that’s currently making waves. Scott directed the original Blade Runner in 1982, and the franchise gained a sequel with Denis Villeneuve at the helm in 2017. Now, seven years after Blade Runner 2049 premiered, Prime Video is developing a limited series titled Blade Runner 2099. This new addition will star Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh as a Replicant nearing the end of its lifespan.

The show’s cast boasts an impressive lineup, including Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games franchise), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), and Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell). These series regulars will be joined by Amy Lennox (Holby City), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman In Moscow), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), and Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon). Adding to the thrill, Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley) have also been confirmed to join the cast in recurring roles, as reported by Deadline.

Although the specific character details for Burke and Lombardi remain under wraps, their inclusion expands the highly-anticipated cast list. Initially, the follow-up to Blade Runner 2049 experienced delays during production due to last year’s WGA and SAG strikes. However, production has recently resumed.

“We’re filming now,” said executive producer Michael Green in a conversation with The Direct. “Showrunner Silka Luisa has created an incredible show. I’ve seen the daily footage, and it’s stunning. I’ve read the scripts, and they’ve been seen by everyone involved. I am very excited about how she’s expanded the world and made it larger. It’s a really impressive, intelligent, emotional story.”

Blade Runner 2099 will be helmed by Silka Luisa (Shining Girls), who serves as the showrunner and executive producer. Ridley Scott, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon’s President of Television Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett also join the executive production team. According to Deadline, Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) will direct the first two episodes and serve as executive producer, with Steven Johnson acting as co-executive producer.

While there’s no official release date for Blade Runner 2099 yet, fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates. In the meantime, both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are available for rent or purchase online.
