Andra Day Confronts Generational Demons in ‘The Deliverance’ Trailer

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for an upcoming horror film directed by Lee Daniels, featuring a compelling story that blends fright, faith, and family. “The Deliverance,” starring Andra Day, is inspired by a true story and promises a unique take on themes of darkness, possession, and spirituality.

The film’s plot centers on Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother portrayed by Andra Day, who moves her family into a new house to start fresh. However, their hopes for a new beginning quickly unravel as strange and terrifying occurrences plague the household, prompting the intervention of Child Protective Services. Ebony finds herself in a battle not just for her life, but also for the souls of her children.

The opening scenes of the trailer depict Apostle Bernice James, played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, sternly advising Ebony. “Remember, before we get started, whatever it says to you, do not listen to it,” she warns, highlighting the impending psychological and spiritual torment. “It will play on your heart, it will play on your mind.”

Andra Day describes the film as “genre-bending,” combining elements of thriller, horror, and family drama. “It’s also a movie about faith, which is really important to me, too,” she shares with PEOPLE, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of the storyline.

The cast of “The Deliverance” includes notable actors such as Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Caleb McLaughlin, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Demi Singleton, and Miss Lawrence. The film benefits from a diverse team of writers, including David Coggeshall, Elijah Bynum, Lee Daniels, and Thomas Westfall. It is produced by Daniels, Tucker Tooley, Pamela Oas Williams, Jackson Nguyen, and Todd Crites, with executive producers Jackie Shenoo, Hilary Shor, Greg Renker, and Gregoire Gensollen.

The official summary of the film reads: “Inspired by a terrifying true story, a mother fights for her life, her faith, and the souls of her children after discovering their new home is haunted by a demonic presence.”

In a throwback to July 2022, Mo’Nique announced both “The Deliverance” and her own Netflix comedy special, hinting at exciting projects in the pipeline. “You won’t want to miss either of them, so stay tuned,” she said gratefully to her audience. “Thank you all and I love y’all to life!”

Set to premiere on Netflix on August 30, “The Deliverance” is a film that promises to thrill and terrify in equal measure. Be sure to watch the trailer to get a sneak peek into the chilling and captivating world of Ebony Jackson and her fight against malevolent forces.
