Angelina Jolie Quit Singing After Ex Criticized Her Voice

Angelina Jolie recently opened up about the impact of a former partner’s harsh words on her confidence in singing. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on Friday, the Oscar-winning actress shared her initial reluctance to sing in the new biopic “Maria,” where she portrays the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Jolie revealed that her hesitation stemmed from critical remarks made by an ex-partner regarding her vocal abilities.

“It was an out-of-body experience because I don’t sing,” Jolie said about rediscovering her voice for the film. “I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing.” She further explained that despite her background in theater school, her partner’s negative opinion had a significant impact on her, causing her to doubt her singing talents. “I’d been to theater school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me,” she continued. “I just kind of adapted to this person’s opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing.”

While Jolie did not disclose which of her exes criticized her singing, she has been in several high-profile marriages. She was married to her “Hackers” co-star Jonny Lee Miller from 1996 to 1999. In 2000, she married fellow actor Billy Bob Thornton, but they separated in 2003. Later, Jolie wed Brad Pitt in 2014 after meeting on the set of the 2005 film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” However, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.

The former couple shares six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. In addition to their personal differences, Jolie and Pitt are currently embroiled in an ongoing legal battle. The conflict began over custody of their children when Jolie filed for divorce and has since expanded into a complicated dispute over their French winery. The situation further escalated in 2022 when Pitt sued Jolie for breach of contract after she sold her share of the business, leading to the lawsuit.

“Maria,” which features Jolie as Maria Callas, will be a significant film for the actress, marking her return to the screen in a role that challenges her to overcome previous insecurities. The movie is anticipated to offer an intimate look into the life of the influential opera singer, highlighting Jolie’s ability to tackle complex and nuanced roles.
