Angie McMahon Unveils New EP ‘Light Sides’ and Fresh Single

Australian artist Angie McMahon has unveiled her new single “Untangling” just before the release of her upcoming EP Light Sides. Scheduled to drop on Sept. 13 via AWAL, this new project comprises five tracks written during the same period as her sophomore album Light, Dark, Light Again, which was released last October.

McMahon described “Untangling” as a challenging track to finalize. The song had been left unfinished on her phone since the beginnings of creating Light, Dark, Light Again. “It was written about someone who is deeply entwined in my life,” said McMahon, “so I never felt like either the song or the untangling itself was entirely finished.”

The song is deeply personal, with McMahon grappling with the notion that she may have hurt someone by being too “slow at healing.” Despite these emotions, McMahon sings resolutely over a solid bassline and gritty guitar, expressing that she is “untangling” the feelings from within her and referring to the situation as “a joint misadventure.”

Recorded at the studio of her longtime collaborator Alex O’Gorman in suburban Melbourne, Australia, “Untangling” was completed between stops on her recent Making It Through tour. It stands out as the only song on the EP finished with her beloved live band: Lachlan O’Kane (drums/percussion), Jess Ellwood (guitar), Stella Farnan (keys/synth), and O’Gorman (bass).

“I was surrounded by trees and my friends and I’m so grateful to them for their musical powers,” McMahon added.

In addition to “Untangling,” the EP Light Sides will feature previously released track “Just Like North,” alongside other originals “Beginner,” “Interstate,” and “Take Up Space.”

McMahon has recently returned to the United States for a series of full-band Midwest and East Coast tour dates, with recent performances in Chicago and Detroit. This tour follows a packed performance at Glastonbury, several sold-out shows at Melbourne’s Forum Theatre and the Sydney Opera House, and an appearance on stage with long-time supporter Fred Again in front of 15,000 fans in Australia.
