Anime Adaptation Announced for Fantasy Light Novel, Fans Excited

An anime centered on witches is no novelty. Numerous series have explored the young witch trope, such as Little Witch Academia, The Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, and Burn the Witch. The year 2025 continues this trend with a fresh addition titled Once Upon a Witch’s Death.

Once Upon a Witch’s Death began as a light novel penned by Saka. It then evolved into a manga, illustrated by Chorefuji and adapted by Kenu Amearare, boasting the full title Once Upon a Witch’s Death: The Tale of the One Thousand Tears of Joy.

Despite the original web novel’s completion, the light novel and manga adaptations of Once Upon a Witch’s Death are ongoing. Yen Press is also in the process of translating the novels for English-speaking audiences worldwide.

Once Upon a Witch’s Death revolves around a girl named Meg Raspberry. On her 17th birthday, Meg discovers she has only one year left to live. Her mentor, Eternal Witch Faust, reveals that a curse afflicts Meg, and only 1,000 tears of joy can break it. Meg’s quest involves collecting these tears and using them to water a seed that will ultimately save her.

Throughout her journey, Meg encounters various individuals, exploring what brings joy and meaning to each of them. The trailer for Once Upon a Witch’s Death offers glimpses into Meg’s adventure, the characters she meets, and the emotional highs and lows of her quest.

So far, the voice cast for the main characters in Once Upon a Witch’s Death has been unveiled. Yoshino Aoyama, known for Bocchi the Rock!, will voice Meg. Yoshiko Kakakibara, known for Psycho-Pass, will lend her voice to Faust.

The anime is slated for release in 2025. Atsushi Nigorikawa, noted for Naruto: Shippuuden, is directing the series. Yuki Shizuku, associated with The Aquatope on White Sand, is the assistant character designer. Keiichiro Ochi, the script manager from The Quintessential Quintuplets, is overseeing the series scripts. These talents are working under Studio EMT Squared, known for The High School Life of a Fudanshi.

Although the exact platform for Once Upon a Witch’s Death has not been specified, fans can keep an eye on the official website, available in Japanese, to stay updated on the latest news regarding the series. From the trailer alone, the anime promises to be an engaging and visually pleasing experience. While some manga fans have expressed disappointment over the differences in art style between the manga and the anime, the overall reception remains hopeful and excited.

Details such as the full cast, release platform, episode count, and precise release date will become clearer as the premiere date approaches. Fans eagerly anticipate the debut of this enchanting and heartfelt series.
