The masterpiece “The Virgin and Child with Musical Angels” by the Master of the St Bartholomew Altarpiece, circa 1485-1500, is an exemplary piece where the visible and invisible, everyday and supernatural worlds intertwine. The Virgin Mary’s face is portrayed as real and ordinary, much unlike the classical perfection favored by Italian artists of the time. As she offers Jesus her breast milk, the scene is filled with tiny angels playing musical instruments, creating a celebration of a lifelike moment infused with heavenly charm. Likely commissioned for private devotion, it reflects the mentality of devotion to the Virgin Mary just before the Reformation began. Today, it can be viewed at the National Gallery in London.
