Anna Wintour Leads Fashion Icons in Disney+ Doc In Vogue: The ’90s

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour leads a retrospective journey alongside past and present Vogue editors in Disney+ UK’s original documentary “In Vogue: The 90s,” as announced by The Hollywood Reporter.

Joining Wintour are former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, Vogue global editor-at-large Hamish Bowles, and Vogue sustainability editor Tonne Goodman. Together, they will share stories about the fashion industry, from the Met Gala to some of the magazine’s most iconic covers.

Iconic celebrities such as Kate Moss, Hillary Clinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Jessica Parker will also provide their insights. The first three episodes of the documentary will premiere on September 13, coinciding with London Fashion Week, while the remaining three episodes will begin streaming on Disney+ on September 20, during fashion week in Milan.

The Vogue editors will recount the magazine’s portrayal of the fashion industry in the ’90s, a decade that dramatically transformed fashion. “In Vogue: The 90s” will chronicle the era’s defining moments in Hollywood, grunge, the Met Gala, the globalization of American fashion, and the rise of hip-hop. Each of the six episodes will spotlight a signature ’90s moment.

For those who grew up in the ’90s or identify as millennials, this show may strike a nostalgic chord. The series will explore the post-Cold War decade that saw the rise of multiculturalism and alternative media, with Gen X (born 1965-1980) reaching adulthood and Millennials (born 1981-1996) entering their teen years.

Even if fashion isn’t your primary interest, the ’90s are memorable for their unique styles and trends. This was the era of The Rachel haircut for women and the hi-top fade for men. It was common to know someone who had a Tamagotchi, used rollerblades, or paired Dr. Martens with flannel shirts—or sometimes all at once.

The timing of the documentary aligns perfectly with the current pop culture trend of reviving the ’90s. From reboots of movies and TV series to comebacks by bands and singers, the ’90s are undeniably making a comeback.

Some of the biggest fashion names will appear in the six episodes, including supermodels Amber Valletta and Claudia Schiffer, MoMA curator Andrew Bolton, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, fashion editors Camilla Nickerson and Grace Coddington, and photographer Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. Others include costume designer Catherine Martin, actresses Claire Danes and Elizabeth Hurley, and designers Donna Karan, Jean Paul Gaultier, and John Galliano.

The documentary will also feature interviews with Puma’s creative director of women’s basketball June Ambrose, supermodels Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, designers Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Miuccia Prada, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, and Victoria Beckham. Musical artists like Mary J. Blige, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, and media personality Kim Kardashian will also make appearances.

“In Vogue: The 90s” will be exclusively available on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland, on Hulu in the US, and on Disney+ in other countries.

Wintour, Enninful, Bowles, and Goodman also served as executive producers for the documentary.
