Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain Clash in ‘Mother’s Instinct’ Trailer

Anna Hathaway and Jessica Chastain stun as polished suburban housewives in the trailer for “Mother’s Instinct,” a drama set in the 1960s directed by esteemed cinematographer Benoit Delhomme.

Chastain and Hathaway take on the roles of Alice and Celine, two 1960s housewives, best friends, and next-door neighbors. They appear to lead an idyllic and traditional life complete with manicured lawns, successful husbands, and sons who are the same age. However, their perfect harmony is shattered by a tragic accident: one of their sons falls from a second-floor window while Alice watches helplessly. This incident sets off a chain reaction of guilt, suspicion, and paranoia that drives a wedge between the once inseparable friends.

“Something is broken inside of me, and I need you,” Celine tells Alice in the trailer. “Mother’s Instinct” evokes the tension and style of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. The two women find themselves caught in an intense cat-and-mouse game as their sisterly bond disintegrates and darker maternal instincts take over, all while their elegant homes and fashions remain impeccable.

At one point, Alice confronts Celine, asking, “Did you put Theo on that balcony to test me?” Hathaway’s character is visibly shattered as she responds, “Do you think I’m capable of that?”

Neon’s version of the 2018 Belgian film “Duelles” has been reimagined as a retro thriller, financed by Anton. Both Hathaway and Chastain are producing the film alongside partner Kelly Carmichael under Chastain’s Freckle Films banner.

“Mother’s Instinct” is set to open in select theaters on July 26 and will be available digitally on August 13.
