Apply for IndieWire & Apple TV+ ‘Lady in the Lake’ Screening with Q&A

Ready to take a dip into some murky waters? On Thursday, August 22, IndieWire, in partnership with Apple TV+, will be screening a select episode of “The Lady in the Lake” at Vidiots Foundation in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock. Following the screening will be a Q&A and reception with the creative force behind the limited series, Alma Har’el. Known for her music videos, as well as her 2019 film “Honey Boy,” a hit at Sundance that year, Har’el is credited as the creator of “Lady in the Lake,” having directed every episode and written multiple teleplays based on the novel of the same name by Laura Lippman.

“Lady in the Lake” tells the story of two women at different points in 1960s Baltimore. One, a Jewish housewife (Natalie Portman), leaves her abusive husband to become an investigative reporter. The other, a Black bartender (Moses Ingram), is the subject of the murder investigation the housewife is trying to solve. Lippman’s novel was partly inspired by two unrelated deaths in 1969 Baltimore: that of a young Jewish girl who was murdered and another of a Black woman who disappeared but was later found dead. Like David Simon, who would later create hit TV series “The Wire” and “The Deuce,” Lippman was a reporter for The Baltimore Sun when she first heard about these underreported cases.

In his review of “Lady in the Lake,” IndieWire’s Ben Travers noted that it “deconstructs its detective story into an interrogation of identity and discrimination, aided by its excellent cast and mesmeric mood.”

The novel and adaptation both delve into themes of racism and misogyny, as prevalent today as they were 60 years ago. There are seven episodes in the series with most of the production taking place on location in Baltimore, Maryland during 2022. The series was initially set to be produced by Jean-Marc Vallée, who passed away suddenly in 2021, but he retains executive producer credit. Portman, Har’el, and Lippman are also credited as executive producers on the series.

In addition to Portman and Ingram, the series reunites Har’el with her “Honey Boy” star, Noah Jupe, and also features performances from “Anora” standout Mikey Madison, as well as Wood Harris and David Corenswet. The first two episodes of “Lady in the Lake” are currently available to stream on Apple TV+ with new episodes dropping every Friday.
