In a significant ruling, a personal assistant who was convicted for the murder and dismemberment of his former boss, a tech entrepreneur, has received a sentence of 40 years to life in prison. This sentence follows the theft of approximately $400,000 from the victim, Fahim Saleh, according to Manhattan’s district attorney.

Tyrese Haspil, 25, was found guilty in June of several charges including murder and grand larceny in connection with Saleh’s death in 2020.

Prosecutors revealed that Haspil had initially been hired as an assistant by Saleh, who had pioneered various business ventures, including a ride-hailing motorcycle service in Nigeria. However, his trust was breached as Haspil soon began misappropriating funds from Saleh’s enterprises.

After resigning from his role about a year later, Haspil continued to embezzle money even after Saleh discovered the theft. Saleh had given Haspil a chance to repay the stolen money over two years, hoping to avoid criminal prosecution.

Concerned that Saleh would uncover the ongoing theft, Haspil made the fateful decision to murder his former employer. On July 13, 2020, he confronted Saleh in the elevator of his luxury Manhattan apartment building. Dressed in a black suit and mask, Haspil used a Taser on Saleh as the elevator doors opened to his apartment.

After incapacitating Saleh, Haspil fatally stabbed him and subsequently returned the next day to dismember the body using an electric saw. However, he left the scene briefly to recharge the saw after its battery died. During this absence, Saleh’s cousin arrived at the apartment and stumbled upon the grim scene.

Law enforcement apprehended Haspil just days after the gruesome discovery.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg spoke on the case, emphasizing the need for accountability in such a brutal act. “Tyrese Haspil is facing accountability for brutally murdering and decapitating Fahim Saleh, a kind, generous, and empathetic person who positively impacted the world,” Bragg stated.

He further highlighted that despite Haspil’s betrayal and theft, Saleh had extended a second chance to him. While the sentence will not bring Saleh back to life, Bragg expressed hope that it might offer some closure to Saleh’s family as they continue to grieve his loss.
