Astros Re-sign Hector Neris for Second Stint with the Team

The Houston Astros made significant changes to their pitching roster on Saturday, marking a new strategy as they signed free agent right-hander Hector Neris. In a related move, the team activated right-hander Kaleb Ort from the paternity list.

Hector Neris, at 35 years old, has displayed solid performance, recording an 8-4 record with a 3.89 ERA over 46 relief appearances for the Chicago Cubs this season. His recent release from the Cubs late last week allowed him the opportunity to join the Astros, and he is expected to meet the team in Baltimore for their upcoming game against the Orioles.

This new chapter marks a return for Neris to the Astros, where he had a successful stint in the 2022-23 seasons, boasting a 12-7 record and a noteworthy 2.69 ERA. His experience and previous performance with the team should add depth to Houston’s bullpen as the season progresses.

Kaleb Ort, 32, has also been an effective contributor, holding a 1-1 record along with a stellar 1.32 ERA in nine relief appearances this season. His return adds more options to the pitching lineup, further bolstering the team’s capabilities as they pursue a postseason berth.

The Astros have seen varied performances from their relief pitchers this season. Shawn Dubin, who is 28 years old, has made 29 appearances, including two starts, with a record of 1-1 and a 4.15 ERA. Seth Martinez, 29, contributed to the bullpen as well, finishing the season so far with a 3-2 record and a 3.04 ERA across 42 appearances.

On the other hand, Jacob Amaya, 25, saw limited playtime, participating in just one game this season and five games overall since making his major league debut last year.

As of Saturday, the Astros are in a strong position, holding a 4½-game lead in the American League West over the Seattle Mariners. The recent roster changes reflect the team’s commitment to enhancing their performance as they aim for success in the postseason.
