Astros Secure Fourth Consecutive AL West Title

In mid-June, the Houston Astros found themselves trailing the Seattle Mariners by a daunting 10 games, casting a shadow over their season’s prospects. Despite the grim outlook, first-year manager Joe Espada was steadfast in his conviction that the team could turn things around.

Espada kept reinforcing a positive message within the locker room, telling his players, “‘We got this.’ He reiterated, “‘We are a good team. We’ve just got to go on a hot streak and we’ll turn this around.’

His words proved prophetic as the team enjoyed a jubilant celebration following their 4-3 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday night, clinching their fourth consecutive AL West title and securing a spot in the playoffs for the eighth year in a row.

Reflecting on their challenging journey, third baseman Alex Bregman noted, “We started off super slow, but the guys just put their heads down and never stopped believing. We kept faith and kept going.” The Astros became the first team to win the AL West in four straight seasons since the Oakland Athletics achieved the feat in the early 1970s.

It’s particularly significant as this marks the first occasion the Astros have completed four consecutive division titles. They had previously managed three consecutive wins on two occasions, from 1997-1999 and 2017-2019. Over the last eight seasons, the Astros have claimed the AL West crown seven times, with their only setback occurring during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

After a rocky start with a 7-19 record and being 10 games behind Seattle on June 18, the Astros dramatically changed their trajectory, winning seven consecutive games and finishing with a 13-2 stretch that brought their record to 46-42 by July 5. They surged into first place by mid-August and wrapped up the division title with an impressive 79-53 record following that rough beginning.

Throughout their season, injuries plagued the Astros, but the resilience of the team propelled them forward. Espada, who took over as manager after Dusty Baker’s retirement, maintained hope amid these challenges, stating, “I never lost hope. When you know how to win, you’ve got the right ingredients. You have to protect it, and that’s what we’ve done.”

In the early stages of the season, the pitching rotation faced serious setbacks. José Urquidy and Cristian Javier required Tommy John surgeries in June, while Framber Valdez was sidelined for most of April due to elbow problems. These injuries forced the Astros to promote Ronel Blanco and rookie Spencer Arrighetti to their rotation. Remarkably, Blanco threw a no-hitter in his debut, finishing the season with 12 wins and a 2.88 ERA. Arrighetti excelled as well, making 28 starts and earning AL Rookie of the Month honors for August with a 1.95 ERA.

Hunter Brown, in his second big-league season, contributed significantly, achieving an 11-9 record with a 3.49 ERA, stabilizing the rotation while three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander struggled with injuries and could only make 16 starts.

Verlander acknowledged the young pitchers, saying, “The young starters that stepped up—Hunter, Spencer, Ronel—those three guys right there—we wouldn’t be here without them.” Their emergence proved essential as the team navigated through adversities.

Offensively, the Astros faced their own set of challenges. After releasing veteran José Abreu due to disappointing performance, the team sought to bridge the gap at first base. Compounding the issue, All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker missed nearly three months after fracturing his shin in early June.

Despite these setbacks, the Astros found a path back to the playoffs, eyeing a third World Series championship following their wins in 2017 and 2022. Tucker expressed the significance of returning to postseason play, saying, “This is awesome. This is what you play for—to get to the postseason and have a chance at a World Series. Every year is special.” He emphasized the importance of cherishing these moments, as opportunities like this are never guaranteed.

The Astros will aim to continue their success, having reached the AL Championship Series seven years in a row and claiming two pennants during that span. They are determined to pursue another title after narrowly missing out in previous World Series against Washington in 2019 and Atlanta in 2021.
