One such athlete is Sunny Choi, a 35-year-old breaker from the United States, set to make her Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Born on November 10, 1988, in Cookeville, Tennessee, Choi resides in Queens, New York. She is the daughter of Kyung-Ju and Jung-In Choi, who immigrated to the United States from Daegu, South Korea, in the 1970s. Sunny Choi has three brothers and four nieces.

Choi’s journey into breaking began during her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. She initially joined the gymnastics team but was forced to leave due to knee injuries. It was then that she joined the breaking club and fell in love with the sport’s physical challenges and creative individuality. She graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in marketing.

In 2012, Choi moved to Queens and began traveling and competing in breaking competitions worldwide. Known for her infectious smile and passion for self-expression through dance, Choi aims to inspire others to feel comfortable expressing themselves through dance.

Choi has competed at the World Championships three times, earning her best result with seventh-place finishes in 2021 and 2022. She claimed her first title by winning the Pan American Games women’s breaking competition in November 2023. Additionally, she has won silver medals at the 2019 World Urban Games, the 2022 IWGA World Games, and the 2023 Pan American Championships.

Sunny Choi made history by becoming the first U.S. woman to qualify in breaking for the 2024 Paris Olympics after winning gold at the 2023 Pan American Games.
