Barbara Eden on Elvis Presley and Larry Hagman: “We Had Chemistry”

Barbara Eden recently shared cherished memories of working with Larry Hagman and Elvis Presley, fondly recalling how well she connected with both iconic figures during her career. From her first encounter with Larry on the set of I Dream Of Jeannie, Eden felt an immediate spark, suggesting a natural chemistry between the two actors.

Meeting Elvis Presley on the set of Flaming Star in 1960 also left a lasting impression on Eden. Despite rumors suggesting romantic advances from Elvis, Eden clarified that they were simply good friends. During that period, Eden was married to Michael Ansara, known for his role as Commander Kang in Star Trek: The Original Series.

Recalling her relationship with Larry Hagman, Eden remembered a particular instance when she hugged him on set. Although it was merely a friendly gesture, Hagman seemed momentarily startled, misinterpreting her intentions. Yet, it was clear that Hagman had a special fondness for Eden, often displaying patience and warmth towards her despite his tendency to get irritable with other colleagues.

Hagman, who passed away in 2012 from acute myeloid leukemia, nearly lost his role as Tony Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie due to his perfectionist nature, which occasionally caused friction with the crew. However, Eden defended him vehemently, appreciating his dedication and commitment to delivering his best performance.

Elvis Presley, renowned for his relationships with several co-stars such as Anne Helm and Ann-Margret, never pursued Eden romantically. Instead, he often spoke to her about Priscilla, whom he had recently met after his time in the army. In Eden’s view, Elvis was genuinely smitten and spoke warmly about Priscilla, who would eventually become his wife.

Eden, being married at the time, provided a listening ear and supportive advice to Elvis, who was grappling with the challenges of balancing his rising stardom with his budding romantic life. Elvis confided in her about his concerns regarding moving Priscilla from Germany to the U.S., anxious about how the transition might affect their relationship. Eden reassured him, encouraging him to approach the situation as a partnership.

Throughout their time together, Elvis consistently demonstrated his gentlemanly manners, often pulling out chairs for Eden and holding doors. Eden’s reflections on these moments underscore the mutual respect and genuine friendship that characterized their interactions.
