BBC Legend John Bennett Dies at 82

John Bennett, a veteran broadcaster from BBC Northern Ireland, has passed away at the age of 82.

In a statement from his family, it was shared that he died peacefully on Friday evening, July 26, surrounded by loved ones. No cause of death has been provided.

His children, Siobhan and Mark, paid tribute to him, describing him as “a consummate professional” who enjoyed a “long and celebrated career in broadcasting”.

“In addition to this, he served many years as a teacher. He touched the lives of innumerable people, and they are ever the richer for his inspiration and influence,” they said.

They added, “Northern Ireland has lost a lynchpin in local broadcasting. We, as a family, have lost a loving Father, Father-in-law, and cherished Granda.”

Bennett’s broadcasting career spanned almost six decades. During these years, he emerged as one of Northern Ireland’s most distinguished radio personalities, presenting music, entertainment, sports, and current affairs programs for the BBC since 1965.

In 1974, on New Year’s Eve, Bennett co-launched BBC Radio Ulster alongside Gloria Hunniford. Hunniford paid tribute to Bennett, labeling him “a giant in broadcasting.”

“We had the privilege of launching BBC Radio Ulster together and we have been friends ever since,” Hunniford shared. “I loved him as a person, admired him as a broadcaster, and have wonderful memories of him singing.

“He was a truly gifted, gracious, and generous man,” she continued. “His contribution to audiences in Northern Ireland and beyond is immeasurable.”

Bennett was most celebrated for his work on The Sunday Club, a program he presented for over 44 years.

In January 2023, Bennett was awarded an MBE for his services to Television and Radio Broadcasting. Shortly after, he was inducted into the IMRO Radio Awards Hall of Fame. His citation mentioned that he had “left an indelible mark on the broadcasting landscape.”

Tributes continue to pour in, remembering Bennett’s contributions and the impact he had on his audience.

On behalf of the IMRO Radio Awards committee, a statement was issued expressing sadness at Bennett’s passing. “John was inducted into the Hall of Fame just last year in 2023. Our sympathies to his family and radio friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” the tweet read.

Another tribute highlighted the challenging times Bennett helped his audience endure. “John Bennett was one of those fine broadcasters who maybe had the harder task—to help keep spirits up and normal life going from the darkest days of the Troubles. We owe him a huge debt. Along with their sorrow, his family are so obviously proud of him,” read a tweet from Brian Walker.

Bennett’s passing marks the end of an era in Northern Ireland’s broadcasting history. His dedication and talent left a lasting impression on his audience and colleagues, ensuring his memory will be cherished for years to come.
