Bears Make Key Decision on Jonathan Owens as Simone Biles Heads to Olympics

Simone Biles will have her husband, Jonathan Owens, by her side as she heads to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris later this summer.

The 27-year-old Biles has qualified for the U.S. women’s team and is set to compete from July 27 to August 1. Coincidentally, this is the same time the Chicago Bears will be holding their training camp. Fortunately, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, the Bears are allowing Owens to travel overseas to support Biles.

“The Bears are granting Jonathan Owens special permission to leave training camp to support his wife at the Olympics,” Schefter shared in a post on social media on July 3.

Biles had already mentioned a few days earlier that Owens would be able to travel with her for at least part of her competition.

“The Bears are actually granting him a couple of days off from training camp, so he’ll be there, yes,” Biles said via NFL.com. “For just a short little time.”

At 27, Biles will be the oldest woman to qualify for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team since 1950. Despite the milestone, she says she still feels the drive to compete.

“Nobody’s forcing me to do it,” Biles said via The Associated Press. “I wake up every day and choose to grind in the gym and come out here and perform for myself. Just to remind myself that I can still do it.”
